What was CastAR?
CastAR was a portable augmented reality console that was set to release in late 2017, but was forced to discontinue due to lack of funding. Users would don a pair of glasses that projected 3D holographic images onto a reflective mat.
I worked on a title called The Video Game Show with a very small team. This title was a collection of mini games that showed off the unique draw of the new technology. The environments I worked on were meant to be viewed from a mostly top-down perspective and at different angles using the CastAR hardware. As we were the first developers to make content for the CastAR console, my job as an artist was also to explore the visual possibilities and limitations of a brand new type of gaming experience.
Since the console specs were similar to a cell phone's, many of the scenes were also restricted to mobile-like limitations.

The Stage
The Stage was the launchpad of the game, where the quirky hosts were the player's guide to the lighthearted "episodes". I mostly did the stage design, lighting, modeling/texturing, and scrolling texture effects. In many cases, black areas of the environment blended in with the tabletop surface and strengthened the illusion of objects popping up from the mat.
Zyborg Intruders 2
A shooting gallery mini game set in an 80's action movie inspired scene. I modeled, textured, and lit most of the scene. I also did some effects such as the flickering lights.
Out to Launch
A game where your pilot your avatar through space, trying to hit rings and avoid obstacles. I was responsible for modeling, texturing, lighting, and some effects.
